The most impressive movement – and the most faithful to the original – is the second, which is full of broken chords that gain incredible power and richness when transposed from violin to harpsichord. The resurrection of Vivaldi’s unpublished works in the twentieth century is mostly due to the efforts of Alfredo Casella, who in 1939 organised the historic Vivaldi Week in which the rediscovered Gloria (RV 589) and l’Olimpiade were revived. This is very clear in the closing phase of the first movement, as repeated chords explode in Bach’s hands in a crisscross of melodic motifs. Bach’s extra notes often supplement those of Vivaldi, but where the accompaniment permits, he likes to use them in dialogue. ![]() At the moment, Bing Chat is only available in Microsoft Edge, but Vivaldi 6.1 can get around that. It was most probably an exciting challenge to expand four single solo lines into four complete keyboard parts for two hands from four strings to dozens of them. Vivaldi will now pretend to be Microsoft Edge to allow people to use Bing Chat within the browser. And with no fewer than five harpsichords at home, it could also have been a family affair, with father Bach sharing the stage with three of his children. If it was ‘born’ around 1730, Bach could have arranged the concerto for (or improvised it in) the Zimmermannsches Kaffeehaus, where he led the Leipziger Collegium Musicum. Unfortunately, we do not know how the Concert for four harpsichords in A minor originated, although we can hazard a guess. But of course he gave it an exciting twist, as in Bach’s version the soloists play harpsichords and B minor changed to A minor. He used one of them – the Concerto in B minor from L’estro armonico (opus 3) for four violins and orchestra – more or less in its entirety. Johann Sebastian Bach arranged various Vivaldi concertos (sometimes thoroughly) from opus 3, 4 and 7, for organ and harpsichord. His music travelled throughout Europe and all the way to Bach’s home. Even more importantly, Vivaldi was the composer par excellence of the solo concerto. Whereas Bach excelled on the keyboard, Vivaldi ruled on the violin. “His famous Stabat Mater is one of the great masterpieces of the Baroque, but I also wanted to record the motet Longe mala, umbrae, terrores, a work I find utterly fascinating.” For Pietà Jaroussky reunites with Ensemble Artaserse, the chamber orchestra he founded in 2005, and almost a decade later he has come full circle, completing an important triptych of Vivaldi recital albums.Everyone has their own specialism. Bach, Caldara and Porpora, I felt not only a musical need but also a physical yearning to return to Vivaldi,” says Jaroussky. “After several recordings dedicated to lesser-known repertoire from composers such as J.C. The list I am showing here is a compilation of several different sources (see bottom of this page) found on the internet. There are, of course, the vocal pyrotechnics characteristic in which Jaroussky excels, as in the blazing Alleluia of Longe mala, umbrae, terrores RV629. The table below is based on the 'Ryom Verzeichnis' (RV), a catalogue of all Vivaldis works established by the Danish musicologist Peter Ryom and published in Leipzig in 1973/74. But it’s not all solemn fare: Clarae stellae scintillate is an uplifting, light-filled motet in praise of Mary, and the sweet-toned ‘Domine Deus’ from the Gloria RV589 has an almost pastoral lilt. Philippe Jaroussky turns once again to the poignant meditation on grief that is the Stabat Mater - this time in Vivaldi’s searingly beautiful 1712 setting - along with a selection of the Red Priest’s solo motets and sacred works. The resurrection of Vivaldi’s unpublished works in the twentieth century is mostly due to the efforts of Alfredo Casella, who in 1939 organized the historic Vivaldi Week, in which the rediscovered Gloria (RV 589) and l’Olimpiade were revived.
